Casanegra novel5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The second part looks at Casanegra’s affective economy of anger and revolt and the articulation of Moroccan youth’s postcolonial subjectivity. 27 Casanegra (Novel) Photos and Premium High Res Pictures - Getty Images FILTERS CREATIVE EDITORIAL VIDEO 27 Casanegra (novel) Premium High Res Photos Browse 27 casanegra (novel) photos and images available, or start a new search to explore more photos and images. The first part of this article looks at the neoliberal Casablanca that emerged in the aftermath of Morocco’s market reforms in the 1980s and how that transformation engendered a new wave of urban cinema a decade later. Casanegra follows the adventures of Tennyson Hardwick, a gorgeous, sexy actor and former gigolo, living on the fringes of the good life in Hollywood. This acclaimed film further allows us to approach Moroccan cinema’s affective realism within an urban landscape in a country that has witnessed the rise of a new historical consciousness of postcolonial youth on and off the screen. Taking Noureddine Lakhmari’s as a case study, I argue that this aesthetic frame discloses the critical potential of everyday life and the ordinary affects of anger and the will to revolt among Casablanca’s youth today. This article deals with the two major actors in North Africa’s 2011 uprisings-namely, youth and the city-through a critical exploration of the cinematic realism that has defined Moroccan filmmakers’ response to the country’s socioeconomic transformation under neoliberal globalization since the 1980s. ![]()

My Fight / Your Fight by Ronda Rousey5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() “My Fight/Your Fight,” is Rousey’s first book, and there is no doubt this is an authorized biography: The UFC undefeated bantamweight champion co-authored the gripping 300-page elucidation of her life and success with journalist Maria Burns Ortiz, who just happens to be Rousey’s sister. Rousey, who is without a doubt the emotional and cerebral offspring of a steadfast family with a distinct fighting spirit, has offered us a stunning peek into what makes her the most dominant UFC athlete on earth. ![]() It’s the complex, menacing mentality of a warrior that is difficult for non-fighters to truly comprehend. Ronda Rousey wants to grab our attention and command it, much like she grasps her opponents in the Octagon and quickly subdues, then destroys them. ![]()

Granddaddy's Turn by Michael S. Bandy5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The Confederate flag flying over the polling station and the facial expressions of the white people there underscore the racialized context for sanitized statements like “some people were allowed to vote and some people were not.” The final page of historical information about voting rights in the South is a nice bonus. Coretta Scott King Award–winning illustrator Ransome captures the nuance that is left out of the text in his vibrant watercolor paintings. Instead, the gentle “patience, son, patience” refrain implies justice will come as a matter of course if readers wait their turn. The story is subtle, skipping over the struggle required to achieve progress. His grandfather is voting for the first time! But when a deputy at the voting booth stops them, the joyous occasion becomes a lesson about racism and injustice. When Granddaddy puts on his best suit, Michael knows it is a special day. Michael has learned the value of hard work from his chores on the farm and patience from the afternoons fishing with Granddaddy. In this touching picture book by the authors of White Water (2011), an African-American boy learns the importance of voting by accompanying his grandfather to a polling station. ![]()

Judge dredd complete case files 395/11/2023 ![]() Along the way they encounter sinister cults, cloned dinosaurs, giant rats, failed robot armies, and mutant psychics. ![]() They’re delivering a vaccine to Mega City Two to stop what amounts to a zombie plague. The premise of “The Cursed Earth” is Judge Dredd having to cross the entirety of the United States on foot with his fellow Judges as well as a dragooned criminal named Spike. Still, the story is largely episodic, and I didn’t even notice the missing stories in my readthrough. Basically, it has some satirical handling of McDonalds and KFC that resulted in the issues being pulled. ![]() ![]() “The Cursed Earth” is somewhat infamous story due to the fact rights issues resulted in it being incomplete. The two primary story arcs of volume two are “The Cursed Earth” and “The Day the Law Died” which had elements taken for the disastrous Stallone movie but are excellent on their own. It also has a more consistent vision of Mega City One, Dredd himself, as well as the kind of cyberpunk/dystopian satire that it wants to tell. Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files Volume 2 is probably where I would recommend readers of the classic British comic book character should “start.” While the first volume has some good stories, I think the second one is really a lot more of what readers eventually came from expect from the world’s most brutal lawman. ![]()

Expresso Bongo by Wolf Mankowitz5/11/2023 ![]() A chubby, lip-curling Cliff just plays himself – and rather well too, in his second film, after Serious Charge (1959). Perhaps he deserves a re-assessment and a new second opinion. Old smoothie Harvey doesn’t have much of an acting reputation, but here he is in his element: stylish, slightly sinister and convincing. Laurence Harvey stars as a seedy, cynical London Soho talent agent called Johnny Jackson, who discovers a bongo-playing teenage singer named Bert Rudge (the 18-year-old Cliff Richard) and turns him into an international music hit star as Bongo Herbert. It is far more fragrant of its era than the Eighties homage movie Absolute Beginners and a much more interesting film altogether. Expresso Bongo **** (1959, Laurence Harvey, Sylvia Syms, Yolande Donlan, Cliff Richard) – Classic Movie Review 3952ĭirector Val Guest’s 1959 British black and white musical drama Expresso Bongo is a fascinating period piece, and snapshot of a long-ago time and place. ![]()
